The Toronto Blue Jays’ Hyun-jin Ryu was pulled with just one out to go in the game. It was a confidence-building move, and one that made sense given the circumstances of the game.

Ryu threw 83 pitches over 4⅔ innings, allowing six hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. Toronto won the game 3-2. Ryu left without a win or loss. He remained 3-3 on the season and lowered his ERA from 2.93 to 2.62.
It was a happy ending for Ryu, as he didn’t give up a run and his team won, but it was also a bit of a bummer because the winning pitcher was right there in front of him.
Ryu entered the game in the top of the fifth inning with a 1-0 lead.
He walked leadoff hitter Sedan Rafaela on a pitch. A batter later, he walked Rob Lefsnider to load the bases. But Ryu remained calm, striking out Justin Turner on a wild pitch. A cut fastball that curved low and away from Turner’s bat.
One out away from the four-win requirement. Ryu walked Rafael Devers after a six-pitch battle. A four-seam fastball on a full count was out of the strike zone.
With runners on first and second and Adam Duvall at the plate, the Toronto bench came alive. The bases were loaded, but Ryu was still on a no-hitter. It seemed like a cold-hearted decision for a pitcher who wasn’t even a rookie in the majors and was once an ace.
But Toronto didn’t have time for such personal considerations. The Jays are in a three-way tie for a wild-card spot with the Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners, all within a game of each other. In this game, a run was as important as a one-run lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Duvall had even taken advantage of Ryu’s pitches in his first two at-bats. In his first at-bat, he doubled. The second was a fly ball to right field, but it was a hard hit with a bat speed of 98.1 mph.
